Christian Shaughnessy
President
Christian Shaughnessy was born and raised in San Bernardino’s Ward 4 and grew up in a small house on 43rd Street. A proud product of local public schools, he was born to a working class family, with his mother a Filipina immigrant and father a union organizer. From a young age they taught him the importance of public service and fighting for working families.
Christian serves as a youth community organizer who fights to stop the cycle of violence on our streets with Sigma Beta Xi Youth and Family Services. He is a former educator who taught children English overseas. He fought for immigrant and indigenous rights as a member of the Chicano advocacy group Mecha. He worked to end the stigma behind our friend’s and loved one’s mental health issues with the non profit Active Minds. He has served as staff in campaigns across the nation for pro people movements fighting against corruption in politics.
Brian Thomas Romo
Vice President
My name is Brian and I work for the Inland Empire Community Collaborative on various projects as the Public Policy and Technology Manager. I work on equity and accessibility projects through the IE Children’s Cabinet and the Family & Community IE to advocate for services that better serve children in the Inland Empire.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Riverside (UCR) with a master’s degree in Public Policy. During my time with the UCR School of Public Policy I completed a capstone project regarding trauma center accessibility in the Inland Empire by using network analyst models in ArcGIS. I was also selected to teach ArcGIS using ArcMap statistical models and software to identify problems and potential solutions in areas such as health care and crime. Most rewardingly, I also taught courses in race and ethnicity through the Department of Philosophy which allowed me to talk with students about complex issues regarding race and finding practical applications of critical race theory in policy development and implementation.
In 2016, I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a concentration in international relations and a minor in Israel Studies. During my time as an undergraduate at UCLA I was president of Progressive Leaders for Democratic Action. Our organization worked closely with the Americans for Democratic Action to push for more equitable policy for students at UCLA and for Angelinos as a whole.
I have worked on both Proposition 55 (2016), the California Extension of the Proposition 30 Income Tax Increase Initiative, and Proposition 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act. Both campaigns allowed me to work on issues related to equity and grade school education funding. I continued to work on statewide ballot initiatives and local campaigns including the recent No on 22 (2020), Yes on 25 (2020), and the Vanessa Tyson for California Assembly District 57 campaigns.
I aim to utilize all my experience to advocate for progressive policies in the region that better support historically disadvantaged communities in San Bernardino County.
Fun Facts
- I am obsessed with television.
- I have 7 post secondary degrees and I still feel like I know nothing.
- Screen Violence by CHVRCHES is my favorite album ever made.
Alex Beltran
Treasurer
Alex Beltran began getting involved in politics when she was 17 to help register people to vote at a Route 66 event in San Bernardino. She went on to study History and Film at the University of Southern California. While at USC she joined the College Democrats chapter and had the opportunity to attend her first State Democratic convention. After graduating she returned to the area and joined the San Bernardino County Young Democrats in 2011. Since then she has worked on several local campaigns including Congressional and State Assembly races in various roles including Volunteer Coordinator, Operations Manager, and Data Analyst. Alex was a fellow for the Women’s Policy Institute where she worked with a team on sex education policy in the county. In 2018 she ran for City Council in San Bernardino only to come short by 8 votes. Shortly after Alex became the Inland Empire Regional Director for the California Young Dems and in the 2020 election cycle, volunteered on 12 campaigns across the region. Recently she was elected to be the AD40 Executive Board member to the California Democratic Party and appointed to the Credentials Committee.

“Every generation grows and learns in worlds unlike the generations before them. We see these cultural shifts clearly defined by decades of cultural flashpoints that shake the public consciousness. The last decade alone has been filled both with tremendous grief, frustration, and uncertainty. However, we cannot forget that above all we are in a moment of incredible opportunity to shape the future for another generation.”

“Before politics our commitment is to the youth of our community and their families. The pandemic has exacerbated the challenges our youth face. These challenges include good jobs, climate change, housing, healthcare, and access to education. We invite all people to join SBCYD who are willing to push our party for a radically different future. We won’t pretend to have all the solutions but we will organize and develop our membership to work towards a better future.”
